I love having a nerdy wife.
A few years ago, either for her birthday or for Valentine’s Day, I got Alycia Mass Effect 2. It wasn’t one of those presents that you get for someone but it’s really for you. Alycia liked the first Mass Effect and I knew that she would enjoy its sequel. She started playing it after I gave it to her but stopped and hadn’t played it since then.
She recently started playing it again and has almost completed the main quest. I haven’t played it yet so Alycia is always careful to make sure the game isn’t spoiled for me.
She’ll tell me to put my headphones in if there’s some spoilery dialogue.
She’ll tell me not to look at the TV if there’s some spoilery imagery.
She’ll wait until I leave or go to the gym in order to continue Commander Shepherd’s mission.
I don’t know how many wives would play Mass Effect 2, much less understand the need to keep it from getting spoiled.
Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
People can abuse this verse and take it to mean that God will give us everything we want independent of his will. But when God is our delight then the desires of our hearts will be transformed. We’ll no longer want what we want for ourselves but we’ll want what God wants for us.
Even better than that, though, is the reality that God knows the desires of our hearts even when we don’t. I didn’t know that I really wanted a nerdy wife who plays video games but God did. Video games weren’t even on the list of what I was looking for in a wife, but God knew my desires more than I did. And, since he’s a good God who gives us good gifts, he brought me a wife who’s more interested in Mass Effect and Halo than The Bachelor and Grey’s Anatomy.
What does it mean for you to take delight in God?
