Yesterday my favorite movie site, JoBlo.com, shared an exclusive story that Marvel has already slated the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy for release in 2016.
I love JoBlo and am happy that they got the exclusive story.
Also, I’m more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy than I am for any other movie this year. I haven’t even seen anything from the movie but I’m already counting down the days until August 1. And I keep waiting for the morning when I wake up and director James Gunn has tweeted out a link to the first trailer.
Even though I haven’t seen anything for Guardians of the Galaxy, other than the picture above, I’m on board with a sequel. I think it has a chance to be the best movie in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.
With Guardians of the Galaxy rumored to be getting a sequel, here are some of my favorite nerdy movies that I wish had sequels.
The Fifth Element
The Fifth Element is one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time. It hasn’t been as impactful as Star Wars and Star Trek, but it’s a great science fiction adventure. It’s a great movie full of action, aliens and the struggle between good and evil. Bruce Willis is great as the anti-hero Korben Dallas and Milla Jovovich steals the show as the enigmatic Leeloo. Also, I’ve never seen any of the Friday movies, but Chris Tucker is amazing as Ruby Rod. I love everything about The Fifth Element. I would have loved a sequel that brought the gang all back together, perhaps to find a Sixth Element to fend off another universe-ending disaster.
Equilibrium
Kurt Wimmer’s Equilibrium is an underrated, underappreciated and under-viewed sci-fi movie. It tells the story of a dystopian future in which it is against the law to experience and express emotions. Christian Bale is great as the movie’s protagonist, fighting against an oppressive regime. And the fighting in which he participates is fast and exciting. I don’t know how a sequel would work since most everything got resolved. I do know, though, that Kurt Wimmer’s follow-up, Ultraviolet, is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It was terrible, so maybe it’s a good thing Wimmer didn’t get an opportunity to besmirch his own masterpiece with a sequel.
District 9
I still haven’t seen Elysium but Neill Blomkamp’s debut film, District 9, was a nice change of pace. I love comic book movies and action-heavy science fiction movies. District 9, though, was a sci-fi movie that had more to say than most nerdy fare. It was a great examination of social justice issues in South Africa and throughout the world. The fact that it was also had a compelling story and heart-pounding action was just an added bonus. I would love to see a follow up to District 9 that further explored the implications of alien ghettos and a potential alien exodus.
Not every movie needs a sequel but I’m happy that Guardians of the Galaxy may already be moving ahead with its own.
What nerdy movies do you wish had sequels?
I wouldn't mind a sequel to "Close Encounters" that focuses on the little boy who was briefly abducted. How did that affect him? What did he go on to do? It might not be that gripping, I guess, but I've always wondered.
Don't know if this is nerdy enough - but it has to be "The Incredibles"! Out of all the movies Pixar has made, this one seems like the most obvious one to get a sequel. Yet we get "Monsters University" and "Cars 2"? Both were ok, but I feel like an "Incredibles" sequel would be amazing.
I din'dt know where to find this info then kaboom it was here.
