While I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 more than I thought I would, it still had some issues. ASM2 has also underperformed at the box office, which has led to some confusion for Sony. Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man, which is why we’ll never see him team up with the Avengers. Unfortunately, though, it seems like Sony is a little lost.
Sony’s first Spider-Man trilogy was very successful. The first two movies were great but that gets lost in how bad the third movie was. Since Sony has to keep making Spider-Man movies to keep its rights, Sony keeps churning out Spidey movies. Unfortunately the need to keep making movies has destroyed any semblance of a plan.
Sony had announced dates for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 as well as the villain team-up movie The Sinister Six. Now because of ASM2’s underperformance, Sony is shuffling some dates. Sony has pushed back The Amazing Spider-Man 3, announced the Venom movie will be titled Venom Carnage and said that it wants to release a female-led super hero movie.
I’m pretty sure that Sony only owns the rights to Black Cat and Silver Sable. If Guardians of the Galaxy was a calculated risk for Marvel, then a Black Cat or Silver Sable movie would be skydiving without a parachute for Sony. I have no idea what Sony is doing and I don’t think Sony knows either.
I’m happy that I’m not a giant movie studio that has to answer to shareholders and boards of directors. In my life I have to answer to my wife, my family, my friends and my church. If something is going wrong in my life, if I don’t really know what I’m doing, if I’m lost, then I can just admit that to the people in my life. Unlike Sony I can admit that I don’t know what I’m doing and that I need to stop, take a break and refocus.
Unfortunately that’s a lot easier said than done.
Even though I’m not a giant movie studio, I still struggle with admitting when I’m lost or confused. I want those in my life to think I’ve got everything together, that I know where I’m going and intend to do everything that I do. That’s obviously not the truth, but it’s the face I like to present.
If we can’t swallow our pride, though, and admit that we’re lost, then we’ll be a lot worse off than Sony. Sony’s just going to keep making terrible movies but we could do irreparable damage to our lives. Being honest about our faults and brokenness is the only way that we can find healing in those areas.
We’ve all been given the power surrender our lives to Jesus’s healing work. And with that power comes the responsibility to actually go to Jesus.
What has helped you be honest about your faults and brokenness?
