A lot of people loved Guardians of the Galaxy. The love for Guardians is so great that it has led to a debate. People are asking which movie is better: Guardians of the Galaxy or The Avengers.
That’s a hard question to answer. I love both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers. In my mind they are completely different movies. People want to compare the two movies because they are both team-centered. But The Avengers was the culmination of five separate movies with six different heroes who had all been previously introduced.
Guardians of the Galaxy is both an origin story as well as a story about a team. We’re introduced to all five Guardians in one movie. We learn what we need to know about them but nothing more. Instead of getting fully fleshed out origin stories for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot, we get skeleton stories. It works within the context, but it’s difficult to compare a team of heroes we hardly know to a team of heroes most of whom had their own individual movies.
Guardians of the Galaxy was definitely funnier than The Avengers and I enjoyed myself from the opening credits until the final scene. A lot of people have also said that Guardians is more fun than The Avengers. While Guardians was a good time, I still have a lot of fun watching The Avengers. And there was no scene in Guardians that can match up with the scene of the Avengers assembled for the first time in New York.
I don’t know if I can say that one movie is better than the other since they’re both entirely different. I can say that I appreciate them for different reasons but I still probably like The Avengers more. The Avengers is the culmination of years’ worth of work and it actually paid off. Guardians was great but it feels like just another piece in the puzzle instead of the whole picture.
Which movie did you like more: Guardians of the Galaxy or The Avengers?
My wife and I have enjoyed both. You are right in that the Avengers was 4 years in the making and the majority of the characters had their own movie as an origin story. Yet Marvel also took a gamble on Guardians of the Galaxy seeing that it only came out in 2008 as a reboot. The characters were pretty much unknown save for fan boys and fan girls and it only had one scene on earth and everything else had nothing to do with earth at all. Marvel isn’t focusing just on the Avengers here but on the whole Marvel universe and how it ties together like Thanos at the end of The Avengers and The Collector at the end of Thor: The Dark World. So, yeah, Guardians is just one piece of the puzzle, but so is The Avengers too. They are all interconnected. I even used that interconnectedness in a sermon to illustrate how the whole Bible is all interconnected together like the Marvel Avengers movies.
