#928 – Apple Event

I am definitely no Applephile.

I say that even though I own a MacBook, iPhone, iPad and AppleTV. I enjoy my Apple products but I don’t bow down at the altar of the Apple Store. I spent four years working on and using PCs and have nothing against Microsoft.

Even though I’m not an Applephile, I did watch most of the Apple Event yesterday. I’ve never watched an Apple event before and had always relied on others to give me the information without all of the panache. Yesterday, though, I got the information and the panache all together.

Here are some thoughts I had on Apple’s Event.

• iPhone 6: I love my iPhone and have loved it ever since I got my first 3GS many years ago. It’s a wonderful piece of technology and I really wouldn’t want to live without it. I’ve been using a 4S for over two years, ever since I lost my upgrade because I went snorkeling in Hawaii with my phone in my pocket. The new features on the iPhone 6 look cool, but I’m just excited to get a new phone since I can finally upgrade.
• iPhone 6 Plus: Good golly that’s a big phone. I’ve never really understood the fascination with massive phones. It all started with the Samsung Note and has continued with the Galaxy series of phones. I don’t need to carry an iPad Mini in my pocket so I’m going to pass on the iPhone 6 Plus.
• AppleWatch: I haven’t really been impressed with most of the wearable tech out there. A few of my friends have the Pebble, which is all right, and I haven’t heard many great things about the available Android watches. I did, however, like the AppleWatch. I love watches and I love new technology, so I was almost destined to like any Apple timepiece. The watch looks good, has clean lines and seems to do some cool tricks. $350 is a little steep but I know what I’ll be asking everyone for Christmas: Apple Store gift cards.
• U2: The highlight of the event had nothing to do with technology. U2 is my favorite band and they have been my favorite band for a very long time. I was excited to see them perform and would have been satisfied with that performance. I was floored when Bono and Tim Cook announced that U2’s new album was available to download for free for every iTunes user. I did not wake up yesterday morning expecting to have a new U2 album, much less a new U2 album for free.

For not being an Applephile I sure did have a lot of positive reactions to Apple’s Event yesterday. I think it has less to do with my love for Apple and more to do with my love for technology and music.
