I really don’t like missing a meal.
For the most part I rarely miss a meal. I have breakfast every morning, a piece of toast with peanut butter and jelly. Sometimes I’ll miss lunch or dinner because I get too busy but, for the most part, I get my three square meals a day.
When I do miss a meal, though, I definitely notice. My stomach growls for a while until the grumbling moves to my head. I’ll have a headache for a long time, usually until I eat something. I don’t enjoy missing a meal because I definitely feel it; it impacts my body, my attitude and everything else about my day.
Unfortunately, I miss a meal more than I miss spending time with God.
On this week’s episode of The Christian Nerd Podcast, Ron made a great analogy about missing meals. We definitely notice when we miss a meal, but we may not notice as much when we miss spending time with God.
In my life I don’t really miss spending time with God because it hasn’t been a very regular part of my life. If I had meals as infrequently as I spent time with God, then I probably wouldn’t miss eating as much. We miss those aspects of our lives that occur with any amount of regularity.
We miss sleep when we don’t get it.
We miss seeing our friends when we don’t have an opportunity to hang out with them.
We miss church when we’re not in worship services for a few weekends.
But do we miss our times with God when we don’t have them? Or are they so infrequent and irregular that missing them just feels normal?
I was definitely in that boat for a long time, not really missing my time with God because it wasn’t a regular part of my life. Since I bought an alarm clock, though, that’s starting to change.
I want to get to the point where I miss spending time with God as much as I miss having a meal.
My stomach growls when I don’t eat lunch; I want my soul to growl when I don’t spend time with God.
My head aches when I don’t eat dinner; I want my heart to ache when I don’t spend time with God.
I know it will take time to get there and a lot of regular time spent with God. I’m willing to put in that time, though, because I want to crave time with God as much as I crave breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Do you miss your time with God when you don’t have it?
