Today I get to spend a day at the beach.
Our ministry summer is wrapping up today as most of our students go back to school next week. Since we live in southern California, we like to finish our summer at the beach. I love spending a day at the beach, under the sun and listening to the ocean. I like the idea of the ocean much more than I like the actual ocean.
So since I won’t do more than stick my toes in the water, here are some nerdy beach activities.
Comics
I love reading comic books unfortunately I don’t have a lot of time to read comic books. I’ve been following along with all of the Star Wars books and some of the Secret Wars books. That’s not to mention the thousands of comic books I could read through Marvel Unlimited. I could be happy sitting with my toes in the sand and reading some Wolverine and the X-Men or A-Force. Hopefully the sun won’t be too bright to keep me from reading comics on my iPad.
Board Games
If there isn’t a lot of wind, then playing board games at the beach is a great option. The best part of going to the beach is spending time with friends beneath sunny, blue skies. That beautiful scene could be made better, though, by beating those same friends into submission in a game of Catan. I really love playing board games but only because I love winning. If there isn’t the possibility of winning, then I’m not that interested in playing. I’d like to play almost any game at the beach, except for something like Pandemic, which requires teamwork and cooperation.
LARPing
Sadly I’ve never gotten into the world of live action role-playing. I’ve never donned a Confederate uniform and participated in a Civil War reenactment and I’ve never thrown on some plastic chainmail and pretended I was assaulting Helm’s Deep. When I worked at the video game store we always felt better about ourselves because we weren’t as nerdy as the guys at the Warhammer store. I feel the same way about LARPing. I may be a giant nerd who knows way too much about Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but at least I don’t LARP. Though, reenacting the Sarlacc battle from Return of the Jedi on the beach does sound fun.
I may not love the ocean but I love the beach. And as we wrap up this summer, I’m grateful for all the ways that God has blessed and worked through our ministry.
What nerdy activities would you like to do at the beach?
