The winter definitely isn’t as great for nerdy movies as the summer is. There aren’t a lot of nerdy movies coming out over the next two months, but that’s OK because we can just go see The Force Awakens again.
Here are the nerdy movies coming out in January and February.
The 5th Wave – January 22, 2016
I’ve been a fan of Chloë Grace Moretz since her turn as Hit Girl in Kick-Ass (can I type that) and Jack Donaghy’s nemesis on 30 Rock. Her new movie, though, doesn’t look nearly as interesting as either of those earlier projects. The 5th Wave looks like a standard adaptation of a young adult series, except with aliens as the cause of a dystopian future instead of an oppressive government. These adaptations are more hit than miss and I feel like The 5th Wave is going to end up in the latter category. The only way I’d watch this movie is if I found out it was part of Jack Donaghy’s plan to tank NBC.
Deadpool – February 12, 2016
I’m not really a huge Deadpool fan. I first remember seeing Deadpool in X-Force #2 way back in the early 90s. Since then he’s become one of Marvel’s most popular characters. I understand his appeal, but I’ve never really gotten into him. I’m planning on seeing this movie because it does look entertaining; it also looks like it earned that R rating. As a fan of comics and comic book movies, I am happy to see that the movie looks like it’s going to be true to the comics. Fox hasn’t always done well with its Marvel properties so hopefully Deadpool can be one more quality movie in its stable.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – February 19, 2016
I’ve read a few of Seth Grahamme-Smith’s books and enjoyed them. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was a lot of fun and Unholy Night wasn’t the blasphemous retelling of the Magis’ visit that some made it out to be. I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I don’t plan on seeing the movie. I think it would probably be harmless fun like the movie version of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but even the trailer had too many zombies for me. I would love to see Elizabeth Bennet fall in love with Mr. Darcy while killing zombies, but I just can’t do it. Zombies scare me too much even in something as ridiculous as this Jane Austen remake.
Gods of Egypt – February 26, 2016
The second trailer for Gods of Egypt wasn’t nearly as insane as the first one. The first one made me want to see the movie for its sheer ridiculousness, the second trailer just sort of made me shrug my shoulders. The movie has already stirred up some controversy for its apparent lack of anyone who looks remotely Egyptian, an oversight for which the filmmakers have already apologized. Perhaps the filmmakers will also apologize when the movie is released and it’s terrible.
It’s not really an impressive list. Other than Deadpool I don’t really think I’ll go out of my way to catch any of these movies. That’s OK, though, because I’m way behind on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and I’ve got to get cracking on those 2016 goals.
Which of these movies are you most excited to see?
