I don’t own a PS4. Even if I did, I probably wouldn’t even play it because I don’t play my Xbox One. Perhaps if I get two consoles I’ll find time for them both; I’ll have to do something during those late night feedings, right?
While I am sad that I don’t have time for video games, I’m not that sad about not owning a PS4. At least I wasn’t until Street Fighter V came out.
Like every male from 30-40, I spent a lot of time playing Street Fighter II. I owned Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition for my Sega Genesis. I spent so many hours flying all over the world beating up people of every ethnicity and color; it was like United Colors of Benetton had a baby with Fight Club.
Street Fighter V looks awesome, and I wish that I could play it. Not everyone is enjoying themselves, though. According to this story from Uproxx, online games have been plagued by players rage quitting. Apparently if a player is getting cheesed in the corner, he or she can quit without taking a loss, and his or her opponent doesn’t get a win. Capcom is working towards a solution that will punish rage quitters, but for now they can rage quit all they want.
Most of us have probably rage quit at some point in our lives. Here are the games that have (and still do) cause me to rage quit.
Magic: The Gathering
Since moving to Yucaipa, I haven’t had as many opportunities to play Magic as I would like. All of my Magic friends live 45 minutes away so I don’t really have anyone with whom to duel. That may be good for my soul, though, because Magic always makes me want to rage quit. Some games of Magic just don’t go my way and there’s nothing to do but watch my life counter drop every turn. Sometimes I’ll just tell my opponent to pick up the cards because there’s no way I can win. I hate that feeling; it makes me want to take my spells and go home.
Catan
While Settlers of Catan has upset me quite a bit, I’ve never rage quit a game; I follow all of those to the bitter end. However, Catan on my phone has made me rage quit countless times. I’ve probably gotten madder playing Catan than any other game. The stupid computer spends the entire game buying development cards and then wins with three victory point cards. It’s a good thing I have a Lifeproof case because I would need a new iPhone every time I lose at Catan.
Ninja Guiden
I don’t really enjoy difficult video games. Video games are supposed to be fun and enjoyable. I spend my day trying to figure out how people screwed up their computers; I don’t need to come home and try to figure out how to beat a boss or open a hidden door. So the first time I tried playing Ninja Guiden I just gave up. I don’t think I even made it past the first level because I couldn’t beat the boss. So $60 sat sitting on my shelf for two years until I finally decided to suck it up and help Ryu Hayabusa save the world.
We’ve all done our fair share of rage quitting, but bailing on an online match early is lame. Losing is the worst, but sometimes we just have to suck it up like the Washington Generals.
What games make you rage quit?
I have no respect for rage quitters. That being said, I broke 2 PS2 controllers over a WWF Smackdown game out of frustration during the story mode. And you are right about Catan – there is nothing more frustrating than playing for an hour and a half, getting to 9 points, knowing you just need it to get back to your turn, and the person next to you getting the win. My blood is boiling just thinking about it.
