March and April seem like a lame appetizer before the feast of summer movies. While Batman v Superman could have been a summer blockbuster, I still find myself looking forward to movies like Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse and Star Trek Beyond. As I’ll have a newborn this summer, though, March and April may offer me the last opportunity I have to see a movie in the theater for a while.
Here are some of the nerdy movies coming out this spring.
10 Cloverfield Lane – March 11, 2016
I’ve got the release date for every upcoming Marvel movie saved in my calendar. I know that on July 6, 2018 Ant-Man and The Wasp will debut in theaters. Marvel sets its release dates and then lets its fans know what’s coming. 10 Cloverfield Lane is pretty much the opposite. Until two months ago no one even knew that this movie had been made, much less was coming out in March. Cloverfield was great and I’m excited to see the different perspective that 10 Cloverfield Lane offers. J.J. Abrams has been explicit in saying that this movie isn’t a sequel, but he also said that Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t Khan. Either way, I’m excited for this movie even though it wasn’t in my calendar two years ago.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant – March 18, 2016
Is this the third movie? The final book is being split into two movies, but instead of Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2, the movies are titled Allegiant and Ascendant. I think my wife saw the first movie and one of my friends thinks that one of the actors is super hot. That’s pretty much all I know about Divergent. The movies have been fairly well received, but they haven’t moved the needle as much as The Hunger Games or Twilight. In a world where I don’t have enough time to read comics and watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I doubt I’m going to be able to see Allegiant, much less any other movies in the series.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25, 2016
BvS was scheduled to premiere in May, but Captain America: Civil War scared Warner Bros. and DC into March. I’m planning on seeing BvS, but I have no idea when I’m going to be able to see it. March 25 is Good Friday, which seems like a really odd time to premiere a blockbuster like this. I’d normally see it on Thursday night, but a lot of my friends have stuff going on at church. Also, going out to the movies on Easter Sunday doesn’t really seem like a thing. I wonder how much, if at all, the holiday weekend will affect BvS’s box office. Maybe Warner Bros. thinks that people will want to see DC’s main Christ figure on Jesus’s big weekend.
The Jungle Book – April 15, 2016
I think I’ve only seen the animated The Jungle Book once or twice. It never made my list of favorite Disney movies. In fact, I’d probably rather watch TaleSpin than The Jungle Book; I prefer Baloo wearing a shirt and flying a plane instead of running around the forest with an orphan. This live-action version, though, does look intriguing. I don’t really even know the story of The Jungle Book, so I could go in without a lot of expectations. Jon Favreau did a great job with Iron Man, so maybe he can bring some of that same magic to a Disney classic.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War – April 22, 2016
Speaking of Disney, apparently the Huntsman is mentioned in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. I’ve actually never seen Disney’s first animated feature, but I’ll trust my friend with the three-year-old daughter. The Huntsman: Winter’s War doesn’t have anything to do with Snow White, which is fine with me since Kristen Stewart is a terrible actress. This sequel has upped its talent with gifted actresses like Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. Combined with the dreamy Chris Hemsworth, Winter’s War might be worth checking out. However, April 22 is right around our due date; as lost as I could get in the Huntsman’s eyes, I’d still rather be around for the birth of our daughter.
I really do love seeing movies in the theater, especially on opening weekend. I might have to shelf that love for a while, though, as I’ll have an even greater love entering my life at the end of April. Maybe somebody out there can get me screeners of my favorite nerdy movies.
What nerdy spring movie are you most looking forward to?
