The winter isn’t known for great movies. A lot of times movie studios will dump movies in January and February that they don’t plan on being very successful. Last year the winter gave us Deadpool, but I don’t see any movie in the next two months matching its success.
Here are some of the nerdy movies coming out this month and in February.
Underworld: Blood Wars – January 06, 2017
The original Underworld came out in 2003. 14 years later we get Underworld: Blood Wars, the fifth film in the franchise. I think I saw the first two movies, but I can’t believe the series has gone on this long. Apparently vampires and werewolves are mortal enemies who have been locked in a battle for hundreds of years. I guess the Underworld franchise intends on capturing all of those years with an unending stream of sequels.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – January 27, 2017
Speaking of an unending stream of sequels…
I don’t like zombies so I’ve never seen a single Resident Evil movie. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the sixth movie in the franchise, which began before Underworld in 2002. I will always love Milla Jovovich because she was Leeloo Dallas (multipass) in The Fifth Element. However, as great as she was in that wonderful film, I can’t bring myself to watch this or any other Resident Evil movie.
The Lego Batman Movie – February 10, 2017
I already told Alycia that I’m planning on seeing The Lego Batman Movie on Thursday night, February 09. This movie looks absolutely hilarious. Batman was one of the best parts about The Lego Movie and I can’t wait to see him in his own movie. Will Arnett as Batman is genius casting as is Michael Cera as Robin. I still haven’t seen Batman v Superman and, even if I don’t, The Lego Batman Movie should meet all my DC needs.
The Great Wall – February 17, 2017
Matt Damon isn’t Chinese, but he’s going to save China from a bunch of giant monsters. Along with Ghost in a Shell, The Great Wall is one of the main examples of whitewashing in Hollywood. The Great Wall, though, is an original story and Matt Damon isn’t playing a character that was originally Chinese. The movie has already premiered in China and the plot is available on Wikipedia. I don’t know if I’ll see The Great Wall, not because of any whitewashing controversy but because the concept of monsters attacking medieval China seems a little far-fetched.
Other than The Lego Batman Movie I don’t see myself making it to the theater for any of these movies. Even if I didn’t have a daughter, who has impacted my movie watching habits, I still don’t think I’d see most of these movies. Thankfully Will Arnett’s gravely voice is here to save the winter.
What nerdy winter release are you most looking forward to?
