I didn’t pay very much attention to the Super Bowl or to the commercials. I sort of checked out this year on football; I hadn’t watched any game all the way through. I did attend a Super Bowl Party, though, but spent most of the afternoon playing Magic: The Gathering. I was too busy trying to defeat my opponents to pay attention to the Patriots, Falcons or commercials. Thankfully the Internet exists and I was able to watch all of the nerdy movie commercials that I missed.
Ghost in a Shell
I don’t know anything about Ghost in a Shell. Anime is probably my biggest nerdy blind spot. I know that people are upset that Scarlett Johansson, a white actress, was cast as a character who was originally Asian. I can understand why that would upset people, but I also really like Scarlett Johansson. She’s one of the most popular actresses working today and more likely to get people in the theater. I don’t know if I’ll see Ghost in a Shell, but it definitely looks stylized and a little creepy.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I actually saw this commercial live, before I became to focused on summoning creatures and casting spells. I am very excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I loved the first movie and it looks like James Gunn has taken everything that worked in the first movie and expanded it. I am very interested to see how Mantis fits into the story and it looks like Drax could be the best part of the movie.
Life
I immediately thought the commercial for Life was a commercial for Alien: Covenant. Life definitely gives off an Alien vibe, but I don’t know if that’s a good thing. Alien is a paragon of space horror. If Life isn’t very good, people might just wish they were watching Alien instead.
Logan
I really want Logan to be good. I just don’t want it to be good, though, I want it to be different. It looks like a different kind of super hero movie, but Wolverine doesn’t have a great track record. The Wolverine was three quarters of a good movie, so hopefully Logan can make it the entire way.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Speaking of movies with a bad track record, we’ve got another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Unlike some of the entries in the X-Men franchise, I love all of the Pirates movies. I know they’re not that great and have entirely convoluted plots, but they massively entertain me. This one looks about as crazy and nonsensical as the others, which means I’ll probably enjoy it.
Transformers: The Last Knight
My ability to ignore movies’ faults and enjoy them does have its limits and those limits are reached with the Transformers movies. I was so excited for the original Transformers and I enjoyed it. The second one wasn’t great and I only saw the third one so that I could give a talk on it at youth group. I didn’t see Age of Extinction and I have no desire to see The Last Knight. How many more times can giant robots come and destroy our major cities before we say enough is enough? I want to get back to the good old days when it was giant monsters destroying our cities.
The Super Bowl ended up being a great game. Hopefully some of these movies end up being just as entertaining.
