I’d have to look back at least season’s episodes, but I’m pretty sure “The Zygon Inversion” is Peter Capaldi’s best episode as the Doctor. In fact, “The Zygon Inversion” stacks up pretty well against the best episodes of David Tennant and Matt Smith.
My sister had told me that the episode was worth the wait, but I wasn’t entirely sure until the Doctor entered the Black Archive. Capaldi absolutely crushed his performance and brought so much emotion and passion to Peter Harness and Steven Moffat’s words. Capaldi’s Doctor is intense and his intensity elevated that scene to amazing levels.
Here are some other thoughts I had while watching “The Zygon Inversion.”
Forgiveness
The only way anyone can live in peace is if they’re willing to forgive.
I don’t know if the Doctor has ever spoken truer words. The only path to peace is through forgiveness. If we can’t forgive those who have wronged us, then we’ll always be looking for a way to get even. If we can’t learn how to forgive others, we’ll always have grudges and old hurts eating away at us. Even God understood this concept when he sent his Son to die for us. The only way for us to be at peace with God is to find complete forgiveness in his Son.
Understanding
The Doctor was able to forgive Bonnie because he had been in her shoes – or her suction cuppy feet. The Doctor knows what it’s like to stand in front of a box with a button. That understanding allowed him to sympathize with Bonnie and all of the emotions that she was experiencing. We may not understand everything someone else goes through, but at least attempting to understand puts us in a much better place. It’s much easier to forgive someone or show them grace if we put ourselves in their shoes.
Clara
Say it ain’t so. Doctor Who’s writers are starting to lay the foreshadowing on a little thick. Jenna Coleman’s trip on the T.A.R.D.I.S. is coming to an end and I’m not ready to see her go. Not since Rose have I been this distraught over a companion leaving. Rose was special to the Tenth Doctor and Clara is special to the Twelfth Doctor. Amy had a great relationship with Eleven, but Rory had Amy’s heart. Clara is smart, funny, brave and I don’t want to see her go. Hopefully she doesn’t die; that would be worse than sonic sunglasses.
There are only four episodes left to this season of Doctor Who. I don’t know if any of them can match “The Zygon Inversion,” which I may have to watch again soon. If not for the Doctor’s impassioned plea, at least to get double the Clara before she leaves.
