Last summer I didn’t make it to the theater very often. Clara was born in April, which meant that she was too young during the summer for me to see a lot of movies. This summer it might be a little bit easier since Clara is older and I’ve got more flexibility in my job. I won’t see all of these movies that are coming out in May and June, but I hope to see the majority of them.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 05, 2017
I’ve already got my tickets to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I loved the original GOTG and can’t wait to see its follow-up. I follow James Gunn on Twitter and all of his tweets during the movie’s production have me ready to see what happens with Star-Lord and the new additions to the team. I stopped watching trailers and commercials after the second trailer, so I think I’m going in pretty clean. I can’t wait until Thursday night.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – May 12, 2017
I haven’t watched many movies about King Arthur. I’ve seen The Sword in the Stone and Monty Python’s Holy Grail, but that’s about it. Snatch was great, but Guy Ritchie doesn’t seem to have lived up to his original potential. Perhaps marrying Madonna and making a terrible movie with her took off some of his shine. Sherlock Holmes was OK, but I haven’t seen any of his other recent efforts. Perhaps King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will be a swinging success. I’m sure Warner Bros. is hoping that this version of Arthur will kick off a brand new series.
Alien: Covenant – May 19, 2017
I didn’t watch any Alien movies until five years ago. I was intrigued by Prometheus so I forced myself to watch Alien and Aliens. They were scary, but I was able to power through and watch two incredible movies. I also enjoyed Prometheus, which makes me excited for Alien: Covenant. Prometheus left more questions than it answered; I think Covenant might follow suit. Covenant looks terrifying, but I have really enjoyed all of the Alien movies. At least now I have Alycia to protect me from the Xenomorphs.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – May 26, 2017
The Pirates movies are a convoluted mess, but they always entertain me. Johnny Depp is amazing as Captain Jack Sparrow and I’ll be happy to sail the seven seas yet again with everyone’s favorite pirate. I haven’t watched too many trailers for Dead Men Tell No Tales; I’m not even sure how big of a role Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley play. Javier Bardem is a great actor and looks super creepy as a ghost captain. The Pirates movies are pure entertainment and I love being entertained.
Wonder Woman – June 2, 2017
I wanted to see Wonder Woman before I ever watched Batman v Superman. After actually watching BvS, I’m even more excited for Wonder Woman. I’m not a big DC guy so I can go into DC’s movies without the weight of years’ worth of expectations. Gal Gadot looks like Wonder Woman and she has a lasso of truth; that’s pretty much all I need.
The Mummy – June 9, 2017
I don’t know which of Brendan Fraser’s Mummy movies I saw. I know I saw the one that had the Rock; I’m pretty sure that was the second one. Other than that I don’t really have a connection to the earlier Mummy movies. I know Universal is trying to create its own shared movie universe with its classic monsters. Casting Tom Cruise is a good first step as that dude is a movie star; he may be crazy, but he is a star. The Mission Impossible movies are still great, so perhaps Cruise can bring some of that same energy to The Mummy.
Transformers: The Last Knight – June 23, 2017
I like most movies that I see. This is a combination of me being fairly selective in what I watch and having a low bar for being entertained. I didn’t like Transformers: Dark of the Moon; it was ridiculous. Why were there Decepticons hiding on the moon? I’d ask more questions about Dark of the Moon’s insanity, but I can’t get beyond the first one. I didn’t see Age of Extinction and I’m not planning on seeing The Last Knight. Let me know how it is.
I love movies and going to the theater. The summer is a great season for nerdy movies and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is kicking it off this week.
Which of these nerdy movies are you planning on seeing?
